ATTO Disk Benchmark 4.01.0f2

ATTO Disk Benchmark

ATTO Disk Benchmark is a free utility program for hard drive performance evaluation. The program examines speed characteristics of the memory storage devices with the help of special tests when read and write procedures are performed in turn on fragments of various size.

If we look closer, then ATTO Disk Benchmark creates the file of the needed size on experimental disk (total length parameter) where the ever-increasing parameter transfer size blocks are recorded. At the same time, the program analyzes the speed of every read-and-write operation and shows the results in Megabytes per second. At a certain moment the speed parameters stop to grow even if the blocks size continues to grow that proves that the disk performance level has reached its limit.

Advanced tests allow to examine hard drive performance in a more detailed way under additional load. So, direct input/output mode allows to read/write without system cache and buffering, at the same time forced access to the record makes it possible to avoid inner cache of HDD itself. Apart from that, the program can imitate simultaneous access to disk of several applications due to the in-built function Overlapped I/O. User can manually set the value of the so called depth of the queue, or in other words, the number of commands such as read/write that can be executed in one turn.

The interface is located in a simple system window. If opened on small screens, the right part remains empty and vertical scroll arrow appears on the side. To run a test, you have to press a single button – Start. To adjust the parameters related to disk examination and also to turn additional options on and off, use several buttons, checkboxes and dropdown menus.

Pros

  • Free of charge.
  • User-friendly interface.
  • Hints and descriptions of all main functions.
  • Customization of the tests.
  • Quick tests launch with the default parameters.
  • You can print the test results using the built-in tools of the program.
  • Capability to create annotations and descriptions for each of the tests.
  • No need to install the program.

Conclusion

Testing of data storage devices implies creation of controlled “stressful situations” when devices work at their limits. This method is used in ATTO Disk Benchmark as well. As a result, there is a slow response of the disk to other applications and OS components when the program runs the tests. So, it is recommended to turn off all unnecessary services before you use the program.
